Effect of Temperature on Water Conductivity | Engineering Note

How temperature changes measured water conductivity and why temperature compensation matters in industrial water treatment.

Temperature and conductivity

Electrical conductivity generally rises as temperature increases because ionic mobility changes. A conductivity value should therefore be interpreted with its measurement temperature and, where appropriate, a temperature-compensated value.

For RO, DM and boiler applications, trends are more useful when measurements are taken consistently. A sudden conductivity change at a stable temperature can indicate leakage, exhaustion, contamination or instrumentation problems.

Use the instrument's stated compensation method and calibration procedure; do not compare readings from different instruments without checking temperature and cell configuration.
